I dial your number
and hold my breath
hoping you’ll remember-
because the last time I called
you had forgotten and you
begged me to bring him home.
I had to remind you he was dead
and there was nothing you or I
could have done to change the
roll of the dice;
it was over before it began
and you silently hung up the phone.
I think someday I will be known as
the new Patron Saint of Lost Causes
taking these metaphysical phone calls
asking me to reunite the living and dead.
